There are some basic qualities to a fulfilling life that are universal, timeless and ageless. Principals that when embraced can literally change the trajectory of your day, week, month, year and life.
First and most important: Have vision for your life.
Have a vision for who you want to become, the kind of person you want to be. Do you want to feel alive, happy, aware, adventurous and joyful? What are the qualities of the type of person you want be like in your life? Someone who is honest with others and themselves? Qualities like trustworthy, energetic, healthy, fun and active? Another important vision is your dream. What’s your dream? What specific goals are pieces of that dream? What’s your desire? Do you have desire? Where do you want your life to head?
At the end of your days when you look back and you say, “Cool, I’ve lived a good life, my true life. My journey was filled with meaningful moments. These were the things that brought the world and myself joy. I feel pride for what I brought to the world. Having become the type of person that leaves the world better. And the loving relationships I created.”
Now, that’s vision!
Many people tell me, I just don’t have a vision for myself. No one does, until they decide to create it. It’s not like you wake up one day and find it in a cereal box. There are some people who have such an epiphany. But, if you are like me, it requires diligence and constant work.
I sit down with my journal, pencil and regularly ask these questions, “What’s my vision for life? What do I want my life to be like? Where do I want to live? What kind of work do I want to contribute to the world? What kind of relationships do I want to build?”
As I have changed, so have the answers to these questions. You see, for a large chunk of my life I left the answers to these questions to random chance, feeling it was whatever life brought me. That is one way to live life, but it’s not very empowering or more importantly it leaves the experience of fulfillment to chance.
Life is too short and too precious for that gamble.
Take ownership for your life by creating a vision that pulls you forward from a place of passion and love for the journey of life. Who do you want to be and where do you want to go? No one can truly decide these things for you, unless you give up being the author of your own life.
Take a stand for your life, create a vision and carry it in your heart. Write it out, care enough about living a full life that you create the shrine within so deeply that it literally pulls you into greater expressions of yourself.
That’s the power of creating a vision.
